Seattle midfielder Megan Rapinoe – the gay soccer player with the short highlights you keep seeing in news links everywhere – stirred quite a controversy this week when she decided to kneel during the playing of the national anthem. She claims this was a show of solidarity with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick who started the trendy new form of protest against injustice when he also knelt during the national anthem. In an effort to one-up the two of them in their protests against injustice, I was thinking I’d go and drown some puppy dogs wrapped in American flags because, you know, oppression and stuff. AND RACISM.
Are y’all serious about this crap? It’s bad enough that your arguments are flat out ridiculous, incoherent streams of nonsense, but you feel the best way to garner sympathy for your cause is to protest the national anthem? We’re not talking about the confederate flag or some specific ideology; we’re talking about the national anthem. This, along with the American flag which apparently is now also controversial and offensive, represents the United States of America, a country that has freed and elevated more people from tyranny and poverty in the history of mankind, not to mention in the shortest amount of time. But you don’t know anything about that, do you?
Fortunately, not everyone here is a self-hating American. I happen to be extremely proud to live in a country where lesbian women can earn a living kicking a ball as opposed to getting hanged from a crane or stoned to death. Apparently the Washington Spirt agree, because they played the national anthem while the players were off the field in an effort to take attention away from Rapinoe and focus it on oppressive lyrics like ‘for the land of the free, and the home of the brave’. Oh, but fear not. The soon to be sainted Megan Rapinoe offered several explanations as to why she believes her protest was not allowed.
– First, in a fashion reminiscent of Martin Luther King Jr, Rapinoe proclaimed “it’s f***ing unbelievable”. A role model for our children, I dare say.
– Rapinoe claimed it was ‘distasteful’ for the Spirit to use the phrase ‘hijack our ceremony’ just days before the anniversary of 9/11. Everyone was thinking the same thing, Megan. Except not.
– Rapinoe claimed the owner of the Washington Spirt, Bill Lynch, was acting out of homophobia when he moved the anthem. Lynch – a military veteran – claimed he thought protesting the anthem was disrespectful, especially to his dead friends who were killed in combat.
– Rapinoe reinforced her argument that the move was clearly homophobic because of “the fact that they don’t have a Pride Night”. Give me a freaking break. We’re not allowed to say you’re disrespecting your own country by protesting the national anthem, but they’re clearly bigoted homophobes for NOT hosting a pride night at an event that has nothing to do with two dudes doing the do? I’m sorry, but your logic is flawed.
What bothers me most about this entire ordeal is the Constitutional illiteracy coming from many of these athletes’ supporters. To put it bluntly, NO, you don’t have the right to kneel during the anthem if your boss tells you to stand. The first amendment of the Constitution, as with every other in the bill of rights, exists to protect you from government, not private organizations. It’s government that has the power to force you to do things against your will. It’s government that, throughout history, has been responsible for real oppression, genocide, and tyranny, not your local Walmart or semi-professional soccer team. Certainly not an anthem about freedom and liberty, one that you’d think the gay soccer player would instead feel more obliged to stand for.
You would have a first amendment violation if the government showed up, gun to her head, and forced Rapinoe to stand while the anthem played. However, if your boss says “do this or you’re fired”, you don’t get to stomp your feet and cry racism, homophobia, and wrap yourself in the first amendment. It’s irrelevant. It’s doesn’t apply.
Liberty doesn’t come from having the freedom to do whatever you want to anyone you want, and when you’re behaving in a manner unacceptable to your boss on their dime, you’re controlling them, not the other way around. It’s also particularly frustrating to hear these protestors claim they’re standing on the Constitution and their principled beliefs against controlling people. That’s a load of bull crap and they either know it or don’t give a damn.
When the government stepped in to force a bakery to bake a cake for a gay wedding, did Megan Rapinoe protest that violation of the first amendment? Or did she celebrate the act of iron-fisted government coercion because she agreed with the premise?
When the government unilaterally forced all 50 states to legalize same-sex marriage by way of a Supreme Court decision, did these protesters whip out their pocket constitutions and point out that marriage isn’t mentioned anywhere so, according to the tenth amendment, the states have jurisdiction over that issue? No, they didn’t because they only care about the first amendment and how they can advance their agenda onto everyone else.
When the government forces liberalism on private citizens, businesses, states, and other institutions, people like Megan Rapinoe don’t care. Liberals are not logical, they’re ideological. They don’t care about our Constitution, our liberty, or our actual rights. We can continue to point out their stupidity, their hypocrisy, and their lies, but it won’t matter to them. They don’t care about separation of powers, federalism, our history, our founding fathers, our flag, or our country. They’ve been brainwashed into hating this country, its traditions, and many of its people. Liberals have even, sadly enough, been taught to hate themselves.
